A former monk remembered the salacious glee expressed by Abbot Brogan as he on occasions paraphrased and parodied this hymn.

This was the way he mocked my piety. He would pull exaggerated poses of Saints, St Aloysius was one I remember and he really shocked me with the Sacred Heart when he said, "Jesus! Have you seen my operation!"
ReplyDeleteExactly. And it's not only piety which isn't sacred to Cuthbert, people aren't either. He described Andrew Southwell as 'evil', did derogatory impressions of Magnus in front of monks, guests and anyone present, expressed an intention to make the last years of Dom Wulstan's life 'a living hell' and his crowning technique is to take a lack of dissent from his listener as agreement and then say you agree with him or you initiated the conversation!

ReplyDeleteJohn, all catholic authorities are like that now. The movements don't need their private subalterns any more - the whole world is now the pope's subalterns.
